Eruption Steel Orchestra, Inc. was founded in May 2022 as a youth-centered nonprofit dedicated to preserving and promoting the legacy of steelpan music. Led by renowned arranger Damany James Sr., along with managers Ms. Charmaine and Mr. Orlando and band captain Jayah Mederick, Eruption continues the vision of the late Martin “Dougie” Douglas—a pioneer in the steelpan community. Rooted in legacy and cultural pride, Eruption aims to bridge generations and strengthen community ties through the rich sound and history of the steelpan.
With a mission to educate and empower youth, Eruption uses the steelpan as a tool for building essential life skills including discipline, collaboration, and fine motor development. The orchestra fosters a sense of cultural identity and belonging by connecting students with the roots of Caribbean history and music. Junior musical director Tyler Cohen contributes to shaping the next generation of pan players and leaders.
Eruption sees the steelpan not only as a musical instrument but as a unifier—bringing together people of all ages and backgrounds, both within the Caribbean diaspora and globally. Since its founding, Eruption has grown into a symbol of pride and possibility, offering young people a platform for artistic expression, community engagement, and cultural preservation. Through performance, education, and legacy, Eruption honors the past while building the future of pan.
