The Adlib Steel Orchestra, founded in 1989 by a group of Trinidadians in New York, was born out of a desire to preserve Caribbean culture in the United States. In 1995, the group was formally incorporated as the Adlib Youth and Cultural Organization, shifting its mission to focus on youth development through music education and cultural enrichment. Based in Freeport, NY, Adlib operates as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, offering year-round steelpan instruction and performance opportunities to people of all ages and backgrounds.
Adlib’s panyard serves as a rehearsal and learning space where students gain hands-on experience with the steelpan—an instrument whose unique layout makes it ideal for teaching music theory. Many students go on to perform with the orchestra and pursue academic excellence, with some even attending top universities.
The organization features three ensembles: a 30-member stageside for regular performances, a 100+ member Panorama side that competes in Brooklyn’s annual Panorama competition, and an Adult Band that focuses on gospel music. Adlib’s dedication to musical excellence has earned it multiple Panorama championships and recognition across the tri-state area. With a diverse repertoire that spans classical, pop, jazz, and soca, Adlib brings the vibrant sound of steelpan to audiences across all types of events. Donations and performance bookings help sustain the organization and its mission to educate, inspire, and uplift through music.
